The World Health Organisation (WHO), has chosen Mother and Child Hospitals in Akure and Ondo as research centres for child and maternal healthcare delivery. The Head of the Reproductive Health and Research of WHO, Dr Femi Oladapo made the disclosure on Thursday during a courtesy visit to Dr Olusegun Mimiko in his office in Akure.
Oladapo said that the research was aimed at improving on the quality of care for women in labour. The WHO representative, who noted that the international health organisation was looking forward to creating better tools for labour monitoring, added that results from the mother and child hospitals had been “so far impressive”.
Responding, Mimiko thanked the body for the recognition and promised to partner with WHO to enhance health delivery in Ondo. Mimiko, who attributed the achievements to the commitment and dedication of the state’s health workers, commended them and encouraged them to sustain the tempo.
Speaking with newsmen after the visit, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju said that Mother and Child Hospital , Ondo had been selected as affiliated institution by two American universities. He said that two staffers of the medical institution had been selected for an exchange programme in the U.S. which is expected to take off later this year.
